Not Your Average Joe E-mail
Written by Pastor Rich

I had a conversation with our grandson Tyler Albushies last week. I’d heard that he was going to beJoseph in the children’s nativity on Christmas Eve. When I saw the program, I noticed that he was listed as one of the kings. I asked him about the change. He said that when he heard from his mother—who is the director again this year—that there would not be a living baby to play the part of Jesus, he didn’t want to be Joseph anymore. “Why not?” I asked. “I don’t want to have a doll, that is not appealing.” That’s the word he used! “Not appealing!” I think he considered a doll to be fake. Tyler figured that the part of Joseph should be played for real or not at all. I explained that our church didn’t have a “fresh” baby for the Christmas pageant. He understood that part but wanted nothing to do with a doll.

I agree with Ty. Although Joseph gets very little attention during the season, he is a real hero. He is not your average Joe. Although filled with fear, disgrace, and embarrassment, he had the faith to believe the angels, the courage to obey. This is a genuine miracle. A young, sensible, pragmatic, and good man, a man named Joseph acts contrary to the evidence that surrounds him on every hand. He sees the evi-dence. He understands it. He knows its implications and he acts contrary to it.

This is God’s call to every one of us. We see the evidence all around us. Power pays off. People with money are looked up to. Nice guys finish last. Well...God’s call is to act contrary to what our human wisdom tells us to do.

We all know that the faith of Joseph and Mary was severely tested. Ours will be too; but just as God’s Holy Spirit guided and equipped them, God’s Spirit will meet our deepest need too!

Merry Christmas
