Director of Music Ministries

Don Hodgkins, Organist/Director of Music Ministries, was born in Newton, MA, while his father was finishing his studies at Andover Newton Theological School. He started playing the piano at an early age, and started formal study at age 7, then began his organ studies in high school. A graduate of Mount Hermon School, Drew University (BA), and University of Miami (MM), he is currently a member of the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), a member of the Board of Directors of the Northshore Youth Symphony (NYSO), and of the American Music Therapy Association, with whom he is certified as an RMT (Registered Music Therapist). He has lived in Wakefield for more than 20 years, and two years ago founded and also directs the Wakefield Summer Band, which performs several times each summer at the Bandstand on the Common adjacent to First Parish. His other job (when not pursuing his duties at First Parish) is with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Dept.of Education, for whom he has worked since 1980 in various roles such as music therapist, classroom teacher, and special education teacher, primarily with students who are residents in several DMH and DYS state facilities.
